...and it's all yellow!
Chris Martin may indeed love it but for the rest of us fans, today is D-Day or Deadline day painted all yellow by Sky. Wearing his bright, branded tie, clutching mobile phones on speed dial to agents whilst shouting out headlines like the viewer is on some sort of obstacle course, Jim White takes over our living rooms. You can of course take the option of many of my friends just to ignore it and check out the next day what your club did or didn’t do, but heck, where’s the fun in that?
I tend to start the day ignoring it, then become increasingly lured by it’s yellowness, and all the potential and excitement shiny new transfers bring. For Arsenal fans in previous years (the Wenger ones), Deadline Day, be it summer or winter, has become something of a nemesis, a destructive and disabling presence in our season highlighting how vulnerable we are to richer clubs or how slow we are to fill the gaps in our squad. This summer feels different though, with a new regime in charge and the early business being good. However, I still feel we need more, we finished 33 points behind the Champions last season and there’s still some serious ‘dead wood’ to shift on.
Carl Jenkinson - Loan/sell to Championship club, I’ll drive him there.
Lucas Perez - Sell for as much as we can get.
Joel Campbell - What? How?... Someone please show him the door!!
Ooooospina - Turkish transfer would be delightful.
Danny Welbeck - One year left on his contract.... move on.
(Many of the above could go on loan after today or abroad as other deadline dates vary).
Aaron Ramsey - Not dead wood but the elephant in the room. Personally I think he’ll stay and go on a free next summer, another Arsenal contract ‘own goal!’, though the club could do a PR job on us all and announce a new contract for the Welshman... I'm keeping everything crossed!
Ins? Maybe another defender as we’ve moved Chambers on to Fulham on loan (bizarre.com), but I think if we sell all of the above it’s more likely promotions/new contacts for Nelson and Nketiah.
With Kroenke hovering over the club like Count Duckula and his 100% ownership eminent it’s become a critical time regarding transfers. If we believe the statements from KSE Holdings then funds could be available and maybe a last minute ‘super signing’ (Dembele?......LOL). Or we take it as just a load of old fluff and except 'Silent Stan' will remain hidden with the odd 29 year old defender worth £6m coming in for £25m. If only we had a choice!
Please try and keep your eyes away from the yellow, and in the meantime look at the deadline day fun we’ve had in the last ten years……
